Vibrant interactions between students and industry representatives at the February 2017 Career Fair held in concourse T-junction
- This image from the 2017 SMU Career Fair captures a formative chapter in the Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre’s (DKHMCC) evolving journey of employer engagement. Held at the concourse T‑junction—then the University’s primary and most recognisable career fair venue—the space served as a vibrant crossroads where students and employers converged for meaningful conversations about careers, internships and possibilities. For many years, the T‑junction stood as the backdrop to countless first introductions, exchanges of resumes, and career aspirations taking shape. As student participation and employer interest grew, the Career Fair expanded beyond the concourse to the Sports Hall, marking a period of transition and increasing ambition. Even within these interim spaces, the spirit of the fair remained unchanged: close, purposeful interactions anchored in DKHMCC’s commitment to connecting students with industry. Today, with the SMU Career Fair firmly established in the SMU Hall, the journey comes full circle—a reflection of how the fair has grown in scale and stature, while remaining rooted in its original mission. Looking back across these spaces, each venue tells a story of progress, adaptability and an enduring dedication to supporting SMU students at every stage of their career journey.

The book is drawn from her IPS–SR Nathan Lectures delivered between October and November 2024. Across these lectures, she traced how the idea of “the university” has evolved in response to shifting societal contexts, examined what it must represent today as humanity grapples with the prospect of 100-year lifespans, and reflected on the responsibilities universities bear beyond the confines of academia. The publication also brings together highlights from Professor Kong’s dialogues with audiences following each lecture, expanding the conversation on how universities can shape enduring legacy and meaningful impact in the years ahead.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaking at SMU’s Mochtar Riady Auditorium in 2012
- On 17 November 2012, one of the world’s most influential and respected women, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, visited Singapore Management University (SMU) to deliver a keynote address on international trade. The event drew an audience of more than 300 distinguished guests, including US Ambassador to Singapore David Adelman, Singapore’s Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat, Minister of State Josephine Teo, Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer, SMU Chairman Ho Kwon Ping, and SMU President Professor Arnoud De Meyer. Ministers, ambassadors, government and business leaders, members of SMU’s Board of Trustees, academics, and students were also in attendance. The event was streamed live worldwide on the US State Department’s website, extending its reach well beyond the university community. In her speech, entitled “Delivering on the Promise of Economic Statecraft”, Secretary Clinton said the US was moving economics to the centre of its foreign policy as it moves to secure its position as a world leader. She added that military might was no longer the key factor in being a global power, and the growth of a country's GDP was becoming increasingly important. Concluding her 30-minute address, she noted that the complex relationship between strategic and economic issues merited deeper examination, an area of study that SMU could undertake.
