Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
- Signing ceremony held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre. The joint research centre will focus on international business issues relevant to Singapore and Asia, and help establish a research culture at SMU. SMU and National Library Board Agreement

Under the terms of the agreement, NLB will plan and manage library and information services for the university. SMU and Wharton Sign Five-Year Agreement
- Professor Tan Teck Meng, SMU Deputy President and Provost, and Professor Janice Bellace, Deputy Dean, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, sign a five-year collaboration agreement in the areas of curriculum and course design, faculty development, and student exchange. This agreement follows an earlier memorandum of understanding signed in January 1998. Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman SMU Executive Committee, is looking on. Agreement was signed on 2 February 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Inaugural Convocation

Groundbreaking for the Evans Road Building
- Singapore Management University Chairman Ho Kwon Ping and President Janice Bellace don yellow boots and hard hats for the first foundation pile for the Evans Road building on 12 January 2000. Located adjacent to the Bukit Timah campus, SMU operated out of the Evans Road building for the first academic year. This date also marks the incorporation of SMU and it is celebrated each year as Patron’s Day.
