- SMU students with local students from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), Vietnam, during the inaugural run of the SMU Asia Global Exposure (SAGE) programme in 2024. The photo was taken in a UEH campus classroom during their first lesson. SAGE is a series of short-term immersion programmes comprising classes hosted by local universities, cultural immersion activities and company visits in Southeast Asia countries. The initiative aims to broaden students’ understanding of regional economies and diverse cultures.
The first IdeaX Innovation and Problem-Solving Workshop in 2021

- Students in a group discussion using the deck of cards from the IdeaX Toolkit to build their project road map. SMU-X hosted its inaugural IdeaX workshop – an innovation and problem-solving session for students on how to better approach their SMU-X projects in February 2021. The IdeaX toolkit is designed to guide students in their project challenges, where the deck of cards are used to facilitate conversations, ideate solutions and evaluate ideas. IdeaX can also be used beyond the classroom by organisations seeking opportunities to make meaningful impact.

- As part of the SMU-X Overseas (SMU-XO) programme for ECON248 Overseas Project Experience (Macroeconomics in Asia), the students engaged in a recreational activity by taking a boat cruise along the Mekong River before heading to one of the local villages for a cultural exchange.

The group is led by Professor Cheng Chi-Ying (left in photo) from the School of Social Sciences. This course delves into advanced theoretical and empirical studies on the psychological relationship between culture and creativity/innovation, among other relevant topics. Students gained practical cross-cultural collaboration experience by working with their Taiwanese counterparts, including students and faculty members from the Institute of Creative Industries Design at National Cheng Kung University, as well as a business client.

- Students from the SMU-XO course "Millennial Talent Management – Recruitment and Engagement" and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) visited the PT Pagilaran plantation in Yogyakarta to collaborate on developing new solutions for recruiting and retaining millennial employees. The students taught by academics from both SMU and UGM, engaged with tea farmers and factory employees to gather insights for their proposed solutions. PT Pagilaran, a subsidiary of UGM specializing in tea and cocoa exports, provided an experiential learning setting for the students. The innovative pedagogy was lauded at the fourth PIEoneer Awards in 2020, a global award that celebrate innovation and achievement across the whole of the international education industry.

- Guests explored Sarawak’s rich culture at an experiential booth by the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore, one of the industry partners featured at the SMU‑X 10th Anniversary Book Launch. In the event, guests were invited to experience the spirit of SMU‑X through interactive showcases and activity booths supported by industry collaborators. These hands‑on experiences highlighted cross‑cultural learning, creativity and human connection — signature elements of the SMU‑X pedagogy. Together, the project gallery and experiential activities demonstrated how SMU‑X learning extends well beyond the classroom, encouraging students to engage deeply with communities, industries and ideas in ways that are rigorous, meaningful and impactful.
SMU won the Automation – Education category at the 2026 Singapore Business Review Technology Excellence Awards held in Marina Bay Sands
- On 29 April 2026, Singapore Management University won the Automation – Education category at the Singapore Business Review Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for its in-house SMU Lost and Found App, developed through a close partnership between the Office of Safety and Security (OSS) and Integrated Information Technology Services (IITS). The digital platform replaces a time-consuming, paper-based process with computer vision and automated matching, allowing finders to log items via photos and users to submit lost reports online through QR codes. Since its launch in May 2025, documentation time has dropped from up to 10 minutes to under 60 seconds per item, staff effort has been reduced by about 75%, and time-to-return has shortened from days to hours. With improved accuracy, data integrity, and user convenience, the system has successfully facilitated an average of eight item returns per month, demonstrating how automation can significantly enhance campus services and operational efficiency. Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
- Signing ceremony held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre. SMU and National Library Board Agreement
- The National Library Board and Singapore Management University sign a memorandum of understanding on 3 September 1999. Under the terms of the agreement, NLB will plan and manage library and information services for the university. Agreement with SCCI
- A group of Singapore Management University undergraduates organise SMU’s first student-run service project, Project Primate. As part of the community service module in their leadership and team building course, they adopted a baby Sumatran orang utan from the Singapore Zoological Gardens and raised funds for wildlife conservation. The students are shown here at the zoo with their “adoptee” and its mother, Ah Meng, in June 2001.

BSI received grant from Civil Service College on 11 May 2010
- The newly-established Behavioural Sciences Institute (BSI) at SMU received a S$4.5 million grant from the Civil Service College. The funds, to be disbursed to the BSI through the Civil Service College over a three-year period, will be used to build Singapore's capabilities in behavioural sciences by supporting the Institute's activities in research, training and education, as well as industry outreach and application. Mr Lionel Yeo, Dean & CEO of the Civil Service College and Deputy Secretary of the Public Service Division and Professor David Chan, Director of BSI and Deputy Provost of SMU at the signing ceremomy on 11 May 2010.
SMU Challenge 2010 flagging off from LKCSB building
- SMU Challenge was a charity walkathon held on 10 October 2010 to raise funds. Organized by SMU's Special Interest and Community Service Sodality organized the SMU Challenge 2010 which rallied the SMU community – from senior management, staff faculty to students and alumni to raise funds for daily necessities and cash for needy elderly staying in one-room HDB flats.
