- Professor Venky Shankararaman from the School of Information Systems (Right) received the inaugural SMU-X Excellent Teacher Award from SMU Provost Professor Lily Kong (Left) at the 2018 State of University Address. The award recognizes faculty who are dedicated to teaching SMU-X courses and collaborating with partners from the private, public, or social sectors to integrate experiential activities where students address real-world issues impacting communities and organizations. Prof Shankararaman, along with Prof Gary Pan from the School of Accountancy, bridges accounting and information systems in the SMU-X Accounting Analytics Capstone, preparing students for future changes in the work landscape. Prof Shankararaman was also acknowledged for assuming the roles of facilitator, negotiator to bolster students' confidence and support their learning in interacting with the real-world.
SMU-XO students network with alumni over dinner in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
- While in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, students participating in the SMU-X Overseas (SMU-XO) programme for ECON248 Overseas Project Experience (Macroeconomics in Asia) took advantage of the opportunity to network with SMU alumni working in the city. This allowed them to gain insights into the work culture, environment, and career opportunities in Vietnam, as well as establish valuable contacts for their future endeavors. They were accompanied by the course instructor Ms. Que Hoang-Phuong Vu, Adjunct Lecturer at the School of Economics, SMU (in blue floral blouse).

- Staff from the School of Accountancy (SOA) proudly donned their school T-shirts during the National Day Observance Ceremony in 7th Aug 2025, having coordinated in advance to showcase their school spirit. With red as SOA’s signature colour, the shirts complemented the celebratory atmosphere of the event, which marked both Singapore’s SG60 diamond jubilee and SMU’s 25th anniversary. A handmade banner brought by the team added a distinctive and personal touch to the celebration, reinforcing the camaraderie, pride, and shared identity of the SOA community. Exciting crowd around the Kachang Puteh man at the 2025 National Day Observance Ceremony
- At the 2025 National Day Observance Ceremony, excited SMU staff gathered around a vendor serving kachang putih, a beloved traditional street snack comprising an assortment of roasted, fried, and steamed nuts, beans, and crackers presented in paper cones. Popular varieties included sugar-coated peanuts, chickpeas, green peas, and murukku. Introduced to Singapore in the 1940s by immigrants from villages near Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India, the trade became a familiar feature of local life. Although now a vanishing trade, kachang putih remains a nostalgic favourite for many who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, evoking fond memories of Singapore's multicultural heritage and community spirit.

Grounded, Growing, Giving: Professor Lily Kong’s National Day reflections in 2026
- Professor Lily Kong (in white), President of SMU, sang a selection of well-loved national day songs with the SMU community during the 2026 National Day Observance Ceremony. In her speech for the event, she reflected on three themes: Grounded, Growing, and Giving. She noted that although SMU is still a relatively young university, it is built on strong foundations rooted in student-centred education and research that contributes meaningfully to society. She highlighted the university’s growth in recent years, including the expansion of its faculty, overseas presence, and campus facilities, emphasizing that such growth is valuable because it enables SMU to deepen its impact and contribution. Professor Kong also underscored the importance of giving back, describing how the university serves society through community service, volunteerism, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the achievements of its graduates. Reflecting on the collective effort behind the institution, she stressed that a university is sustained not only by its faculty, but also by the staff whose often unseen work supports and advances its mission. Her remarks served as a reminder that institutions and communities alike are strengthened by the people whose dedication, service, and shared purpose uphold them every day.
An SMU maker engages with a guest amid a colourful display of creative handmade accessories and mechandise
- At SMU Patron’s Day 2026, SMU Maker Ms Kathlynn Ho, a Year 1 undergraduate from the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, engaging a guest at her booth. Inspired by her love for crafting and a desire to bring joy to others, she co-founded a small business with a fellow cat enthusiast, creating and selling handmade accessories and merchandise. A highlight of Singapore Management University’s annual Patron’s Day, the SMU Makers showcase is a curated marketplace featuring entrepreneurial students, alumni, and staff. This year’s showcase brought together 28 makers across 26 booths, presenting an eclectic mix of crafts, fashion, food, lifestyle products, poetry, and handicrafts. With booth spaces provided free of charge, the initiative emphasised the sharing of ideas, creativity, and passions while celebrating the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the SMU community.
