US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaking at SMU’s Mochtar Riady Auditorium in 2012
On 17 November 2012, one of the world’s most influential and respected women, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, visited Singapore Management University (SMU) to deliver a keynote address on international trade. The event drew an audience of more than 300 distinguished guests, including US Ambassador to Singapore David Adelman, Singapore’s Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat, Minister of State Josephine Teo, Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer, SMU Chairman Ho Kwon Ping, and SMU President Professor Arnoud De Meyer. Ministers, ambassadors, government and business leaders, members of SMU’s Board of Trustees, academics, and students were also in attendance. The event was streamed live worldwide on the US State Department’s website, extending its reach well beyond the university community.
In her speech, entitled “Delivering on the Promise of Economic Statecraft”, Secretary Clinton said the US was moving economics to the centre of its foreign policy as it moves to secure its position as a world leader. She added that military might was no longer the key factor in being a global power, and the growth of a country's GDP was becoming increasingly important. Concluding her 30-minute address, she noted that the complex relationship between strategic and economic issues merited deeper examination, an area of study that SMU could undertake.
