    Announcing Location of SMU's Permanent Campus
    Speaking on 5 December 1998, Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan announces that Singapore Management University's permanent campus will be built at the Bras Basah area of the city. The announcement was made at the Singapore Institute of Management.


      Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
      Signing ceremony held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre. The joint research centre will focus on international business issues relevant to Singapore and Asia, and help establish a research culture at SMU.         Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement

This joint research centre will focus on international business issues relevant to Singapore and Asia, and help establish a research culture at SMU. The deputy dean of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Janice Bellace, is named as the centre director and SMU president-designate. DPM Tony Tan also announced that SMU will award its own degrees beginning with its first graduates. The signing ceremony was held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

            DPM Tony Tan Visits SMU
            The university flag is presented to Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan by Singapore Management University’s Class of 2000. This occasion marked the beginning of the university’s student activities.                     Commencement 2004
                    Deputy Prime Minister Dr Tony Tan addressing students at Singapore Management University's inaugural commencement ceremony held on 10 July 2004. Three hundred and nine students from the pioneer class of undergraduates were awarded bachelor's degrees in business management or accountancy. Twenty-one students earned double bachelor's degrees. In addition, the ceremony also marked the graduation of forty-one students who earned master of science in applied finance degrees. The event was held at Raffles City Convention Centre.


                      Launch of LARC with CMU
                      Singapore Management University (SMU) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have teamed up to establish the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC). The Centre will develop new techniques to acquire data on consumer and social behavior and pioneer new approaches to analyse such data to develop applications and methods that will benefit consumers, businesses and society. The collaboration has received a S$26 million grant over five years from the National Research Foundation in Singapore. This fund is managed through the multi-agency Interactive Digital Media Programme Office (IDMPO) hosted by Media Development Authority of Singapore. With SMU and CMU committed to cash and in-kind contributions, and third party funding, the S$60 million centre will establish Singapore as one of the world's pre-eminent centres of excellence in computational social science. The Living Analytics research programme is distinctive in that it combines the key technologies of Big Data (large scale data mining, statistical machine learning, and computational tools for the analysis of dynamic social networks) with analytics focused on consumer behavior and social media.
