    Groundbreaking for the Evans Road Building

      Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
      Signing ceremony held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre.           Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
          Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan speaking at the signing ceremony to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre. This joint research centre will focus on international business issues relevant to Singapore and Asia, and help establish a research culture at SMU. The deputy dean of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Janice Bellace, is named as the centre director and SMU president-designate. DPM Tony Tan also announced that SMU will award its own degrees beginning with its first graduates. The signing ceremony was held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.


            DPM Tony Tan Visits SMU
            The university flag is presented to Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan by Singapore Management University’s Class of 2000. This occasion marked the beginning of the university’s student activities. SMU President Janice Bellace and DPM Tony Tan can be seen in the centre of the photo taken in front of the Evans Road building on 8 September 2000.


              Convocation 2001
              Minister for Education Teo Chee Hean speaking at Singapore Management University’s second convocation, held at Suntec City Convention Centre on 12 August 2001. The Minister announced that SMU will start its third school—the School of Economics and Social Sciences—with an initial intake of 50 students for the bachelor of economics degree in 2002.

                  Inaugural Convocation
                  View of the audience and stage at the inaugural convocation ceremony marking the opening of Singapore Management University and the beginning of the academic year. Over 1,200 guests, 35 faculty and 306 students attended. Education Minister Teo Chee Hean was guest of honour. Ceremonies were held on 29 July 2000 at Bras Basah Park, the site of the Singapore Management University’s future city campus.

                          Announcing Location of SMU's Permanent Campus
                          Speaking on 5 December 1998, Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan announces that Singapore Management University's permanent campus will be built at the Bras Basah area of the city. The announcement was made at the Singapore Institute of Management.

                                          TCS-SMU iCIty-Lab inauguration on 5 August 2011
                                          Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services, business solutions and consulting firm, and the Singapore Management University (SMU) announced on 5 August 2011 the establishment of the TCS-SMU iCity Lab to be located at SMU. The collaboration agreement signed today states the two organizations are partnering to create a new research facility to develop industry standards and IT frameworks for the emerging intelligent city (ā€œiCityā€) model of urban development.                                                   SMU launches the new Applied Research Centre for Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia (ARCIALA). The launch event was graced by Guest-of-honour Ms Indranee Rajah, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, who delivered an Opening Address at the launch event. Helming the new Centre as its Director is Professor of Law Liu Kung-Chung; the Centre’s Deputy Director is Professor of Law Irene Calboli
