Wharton-SMU Research Centre Agreement
- Signing ceremony held on 10 June 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel to establish the Wharton-Singapore Management University Research Centre. Left to right: SMU Chairman Ho Kwon Ping, Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan, Minister for Education Teo Chee Hean and SMU President-Designate Janice Bellace. The joint research centre will focus on international business issues relevant to Singapore and Asia, and help establish a research culture at SMU. SMU and Wharton Sign Five-Year Agreement
- Professor Tan Teck Meng, SMU Deputy President and Provost, and Professor Janice Bellace, Deputy Dean, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, sign a five-year collaboration agreement in the areas of curriculum and course design, faculty development, and student exchange. This agreement follows an earlier memorandum of understanding signed in January 1998. Ho Kwon Ping, Chairman SMU Executive Committee, is looking on. Agreement was signed on 2 February 1999 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
DPM Tony Tan Visits SMU
- The university flag is presented to Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan by Singapore Management University’s Class of 2000. This occasion marked the beginning of the university’s student activities. SMU President Janice Bellace and DPM Tony Tan can be seen in the centre of the photo taken in front of the Evans Road building on 8 September 2000.

Inaugural Convocation

He gave students an account of his personal life and corporate experiences. The talk was held at the Singapore Art Museum on 19 July 2000. Groundbreaking for the Evans Road Building
- Singapore Management University Chairman Ho Kwon Ping and President Janice Bellace don yellow boots and hard hats for the first foundation pile for the Evans Road building on 12 January 2000. Located adjacent to the Bukit Timah campus, SMU operated out of the Evans Road building for the first academic year. This date also marks the incorporation of SMU and it is celebrated each year as Patron’s Day.
Singapore's Universities Sign Agreement
- On 11 June 2001, Singapore Management University signed a student exchange memorandum of understanding with National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. The agreement allows up to 20 undergraduates from each of the three institutions to take up courses at the other universities. Selected students will have expanded course offerings and an exposure to different styles of teaching. Project Primate
- President Janice Bellace (with flowers), students and faculty at Zouk Club on 13 June 2001. A group of Singapore Management University undergraduates organised SMU’s first student-run service project, Project Primate. As part of the community service module in their leadership and team building course, they adopted a baby Sumatran Orangutan and raised funds for wildlife conservation. The fund-raising efforts culminated in a bash at Zouk.
Cross-Cultural Studies
- On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Mr Choor Singh, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of Singapore, made a donation to launch Singapore Management University's Centre for Cross-Cultural Studies (now known as the Wee Kim Wee Centre). The centre is to be a platform for research, discussion and teaching across political, geographical and cultural boundaries.
